Gov. Andrew Cuomo this month will appear at a fundraiser for the Democratic Senate candidate running for a Long Island seat held by Republican Sen. Carl Marcellino.

Cuomo will appear as a special guest at the June 15 fundraiser for Democrat Jim Gaughran, with contributions ranging from $250 to $10,000.
An email from the campaign took note of the recent 31-31 deadlock in the state Senate that has stifled the progress of legislation in the chamber — a development that has both Republicans and Democrats pointing fingers at one another.
“The Republican Majority last week showed us just how dysfunctional the State Senate has become,” the email from the Gaughran campaign stated. “For two days in a row, they shut down the Senate because they didn’t want to vote on legislation to protect women’s rights in New York.
Across New York, people are looking at the 5th Senate District as our best chance of flipping the State Senate and creating a functional majority to pass critical reforms. With your help, we can do this!”
Cuomo this year has pushed for a Democratic takeover of the Senate, working to negotiate a unity deal that led to the dissolution of the Independent Democratic Conference. Cuomo has been closer than ever politically with Democrats in the chamber this election cycle as he faces a primary challenge from actress and education advocate Cynthia Nixon.
Cuomo last year also appeared at an event pushing for Gaughran’s election.
